Changing Jobs? Breaking Down the Mystery in Moving Fast

Moving fast in the Job Market

If you get a new job offer that requires a move, you may have to make a move very quickly. Here are some tips on how to handle this challenge and be able to move very fast.

Make an Inventory: Go through your things and list the essential things you need for your new place. Identify items that can be sold, given away, or trashed.

  • Find a New Place at the New Location: How you will move depends on where you are going and what the new place is like.

  • Rent a Temporary Storage Space: If you do not have time to go through everything right away, move only the things needed for temporary survival purposes and put everything else in temporary storage to go through later when you have more time.

  • Hire Help: Do not try to do everything yourself; hire some help. It is best to hire a trusted person who can do anything you need to do that you leave behind. For example, you may take only a few suitcases and get a room to rent near your new job. You may live temporarily while the rest of the move is organized to come later when you get a new home.

  • Organize Items for the Move: If you are not taking everything at once, clear one room and fill it with the most important things to be packed and moved. Mark all boxes with the contents so they are easy to identify. An excellent way to have a visual record is to make a video of the contents going into each box. This can be helpful when looking for a specific item at your new location.

  • Pack Room by Room: Mark the boxes for the rooms they will be placed in upon arriving at the new location.

  • Purge While Packing: Do not pack anything you no longer use or need. Please get rid of stuff by selling it online or giving it away. The selling of items online can be done by your hired assistant. You may want to share the proceeds from the sales to pay them.

  • Have Plenty of Packing Supplies: When packing, make sure you have everything needed to pack things safely, such as lots of newspaper, bubble wrap, plastic bags, boxes, and packing tape.

  • Keep Clothes on Hangers: Pack clothes in a wardrobe box that allows them to remain on hangers. Then, when you arrive, your clothes will be in excellent condition and can be hung in the closets easily.

  • Label All the Boxes: A technique to make it easier to unpack is to pre-print labels with the room names of the new place. Use a label on all four sides of each box to make unpacking faster. Have extra labels for “fragile,” “open first,” and “store” to indicate any special-handling information about the contents of a particular box.

Start as soon as possible, and do not leave everything to the last minute.
